Commonwealth Wine School, New England's premier school for wine education, has announced LONG ISLAND WINE CAMP, a 2-DAY WINE-TASTING & EDUCATIONAL EXTRAVAGANZA IN THE NORTH FORK, July 26 & 27, 2022.
Long Island Wine Camp is an action-packed, grape growing, wine tasting, educational experience with exclusive access to some of the most renowned properties on Long Island. Campers will be offered behind-the-scenes access to top producers including Lenz, Sparkling Pointe, Paumanok, and RGNY, along with an exploration of the terroir and diversity of this extraordinary North Fork region.
Home to remarkably elegant and intriguing wines to be made in the United States today, Long Islands investment in viticulture began in the 1970s, when growers and winemakers began experimenting with grape varieties and refining their wines. With the regions maritime climate that benefits from the warming Gulf Stream, its no surprise Long Island has embraced the traditional Bordeaux grapes of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc, among others.
With no legal requirements specifying which grapes must be planted, and with hundreds of acres under vine, Long Island is able to ripen a wide array of grape varieties (over 25!) that also include Chardonnay, Albariño, Gewürtztraminer, and Friulano. In fact, spectacular examples of traditional-method sparkling wines (think Champagne-style), oak-aged reds, lively and crisp whites, and seductive dessert wines are easy to find.
Each day of Long Island Wine Camp, participants will head from Hyatt Place in Riverhead for in-depth tours, talks, presentations, and activities in the North Fork wine region. Campers are sure to depart as Long Island wine experts and disciples!
Our goal is to provide an educational platform in a fun format for people to learn more about wine, says Director of Commonwealth Wine School, Jessica Sculley. Were proud to offer the Long Island Wine Camp in addition to our schools array of public tasting classes, trade events, and certification courses led by instructors who are experts in their fields.
Lunch and dinners, as well as transportation from Hyatt Place to scheduled activities is included in the camp cost of $1,495 per person (lodging and transportation to Riverhead is not included. Registration deadline is June 1 to lock in special hotel pricing).
